Friends,
First let me invite you to "visit" my little Marine Supply Store on Highway 181 in Fairhope, Alabama!
Thanks to you my customers and friends I am here and ready to serve your boating supply needs for a 3rd Summer and Fall 2014 Boating and Fishing Season!
Today's "short-story" is about the time my ex-wife, my daughter Allison and my son Alex and I went to Sand Island for the night if my memory serves me correctly back in 2003 to spend the night on the Bay Liner and to do a little fishing!
We left the Model Home on County Road 64 in Daphne, Alabama and trailered over to Dauphin Island, Al to Launch the boat near the Coast Guard Station at what is commonly referred to as Billy Goat Hole on a Saturday Afternoon!
We launched the boat and both of the Force Engines purred like kittens as I eased the "Keep Her Wet" back off the Aluminum Float-On Trailer so that my ex-wife could ease the GMC 1500 on out of the ramp.
I didn't own the boat long enough to add weight to the Trailer but the bottom-line is the Float-On Trailer Floated pretty well itself for goodness sakes!
Damn thing would float right on over underneath the dock if you didn't get the boat unloaded or loaded and the Trailer out of the water when the boat wasn't on the Trailer1
You had to be pretty well coordinated or the trailer could get you in a bind.
The "Keep Her Wet" floated pretty darn well herself and after either myself or my ex-wife got the Truck Parked we eased on out of Billy Goat Hole and South and West around Fort Gaines as we headed on over to Sand Island!
It was a beautiful hot almost calm summer afternoon!
I had the "Keep Her Wet" up and planed off with some Fleet-Wood Mac on the CD player as we cruised on out to Sand Island for the Evening!
The plan was for the kids to stay on the Beach in their Tents and Val and I on the Boat but it didn't turn out that way!
Yall it was their plan!!!
They wanted to stay in them danged tents by themselves and we just wanted to stay on the boat for some reason I forget!
It was one beautiful night out on Sand Island that night!
We anchored off the beach a few feet and put out the stern anchor in the shallow water so we could basically step off the boat into waist deep water keeping the bow of the "Keep Her Wet" in Deep water! Basically stern to shore!
I set up my bar-b-grill on the bow near the anchor pulpit with some music playing as the Sun lowered in the sky!
The rest of the family had gone on swimming so I jumped on in the water myself and we waded up to the Beach to see if there was anyone on the Island that night we knew but not this night although there were a lot of boats at the Island that night!
Those were the days before Hurricane Katrina when Sand Island was still exclusively for Boaters!
There was still a nice channel between Sand Island and Dauphin Island with the end of the fishing pier visible off in the distance!
We were anchored on the Leeward side of the Island in the pretty green water but we walked over to the windward side of the Island with the kids to catch the cool breeze and play in the surf!
What fun I have had on that Island!
We set the tents up for the kids after playing on the windward side of the Island and headed back to the boat while they played on the beach to have a drink listen to some music and play around in the water for a little while before supper!
I started supper that night for the family with Val's help in the galley and this time out on the boat for the night we had a feast!
My father had bought me a Magma Propane Grill for my birthday in 2003 and I put it too use that night my friends!
After supper and after the sun went down we all went for another swim and a walk on the beach looking for sea-shells!
Later in the evening with the kids settled on the beach for their first camp out alone Val and I spent some quality time together in the water and swimming around the boat just talking!
We worked together but not really building homes back then and it was nice to change the subject and re-charge our batteries while listening to some good music and having a drink or two.
We decided to hit the cabin and turn in but the kids just didn't like the beach and the tents so when they called "Mom and Dad"!
Both Val and I said "Lets let em on the Boat!" They slept on the fantail and we slept in the cabin but I decided to lay up on the bow and while listening to some music a few "shooting stars" lit up the sky out there at Sand Island that Night!
Lord yall like I said in the last post "There is nothing that compares to laying on the bow of a boat at night listening to your favorite music while star gazing knowing your family is right there with you hopefully enjoying themselves!"
If you don't have a family and its just you and your sweet heart the same is true.
We got up the next morning and went fishing but the heck with that part of the story although it was a blast because we came on back by Sand Island to get some more sunburn and swim as we always had and the kids found a beautiful huge "horse-shoe" crab that had died and washed up on the beach.
I didn't want to leave that out of the story because my daughter and I were talking about that "horse-shoe" crab the other day!
I wish you could have seen the look on their faces!
As all boating stories go this one has to end so until next time......
