Journal Entry 032214-A: Battleship Marine!

Friends,

 

A short story!

 

One time in the late 70's when Terry Cove Marina was still Terry Cove Marine at Orange Beach my parents kept the Mermaid docked in the Marina.

 

We would all go down on a Saturday night after my parents closed their Exxon Travel Stop located on Battleship Parkway across from where Stauter Boats was for many years prior to hurricane Frederic and Laps is located now and spend the night on the Mermaid!

 

I think I'll save that story for another time and tell one that is a little more exciting.

 

All the short stories of the time spent with my parents on a boat begin the way this story has begun with hard work then recreation something I am very proud of being able to say.

 

My parents enjoyed work. I do too but I also love excitement.

 

One night we left Dog River Marina and headed out into Mobile Bay on a planned Southerly heading toward an anchorage in one of the coves north-west of Billy Goat Hole at Dauphin Island.

 

My mother had CCR on the stereo 8-track player or it could have been Barry White but as we traveled South parrell with the Mobile Channel but not in the channel the weather became quite nasty with wavez building and the wind a howling as the twin 350's roared!

 

There are so many songs in my memory from many of these late-nights runs to Dauphin Island that my parents and I made but I'm sure it was CCR that was booming over the speakers on the Mermaid that Night as the waves broke over the bow of the Mermaid and inundated the windshield and windshield wipers!

 

My dad at the helm running the ship like a Captain with Cats eyes no spotlight did he use- navigation using the light of the stars and a compass!

 

The spot light only blinds you to what may be in the water ahead.

 

You use the spotlight to find a channel marker or to determine an object ahead nothing more!

 

I trusted my dad with that boat so much I lay on the Sofa-Bed listening to the roar of the engines the sound of CCR and the water brushing against that old Chris Crafts hull.

 

I laid there with a thrill in my heart and a pride I will never forget!

 

Not one ounce of fear!

 

We pulled into Billy Goat Hole and I went to sleep in the forward state room and the next day we went fishing!

 

That my friends is the reason I have no fear of the Sea. My dad taught me that fear at Sea only distracts and confuses you!

 

You keep the ship afloat and let your skills, instinct and experience keep you out of the water and her Wet!

 

That is why when I had a chance to buy a fine boat once in my life and her name was "Keep Her Wet" I thought my God that is the whole idea!
